A Gentle Winter Workshop Rooted in Rest, Balance, and Care

While Mother Earth Sleeps Workshop

Mother Earth Sleeps is a calm, story-based workshop designed for students in Kindergarten to Grade 8. It invites children to experience winter as a time of rest, quiet, and balance rather than emptiness or inactivity
Guided by teachings shared through Jessica’s Abenaki roots connected to Odanak, this workshop uses storytelling, land-based learning, and sensory art to help students regulate their bodies, reflect on seasonal cycles, and build respect for the natural world. The experience is especially supportive during winter months when students benefit from grounding, calm, and emotional regulation.

Storytelling – Mother Earth at Rest

The workshop begins with a shift in atmosphere. Lights are dimmed to reflect winter quiet. A drum or shaker creates a slow, steady heartbeat. Winter objects such as pine, snow imagery, or ice are used as storytelling supports.

Through oral storytelling, students learn that:

Winter is a time of rest and renewal
Slowing down is natural and necessary
Cycles help bring balance

Students are gently asked:
“What does winter ask of us?”

This storytelling moment helps students feel calm, grounded, and emotionally regulated before moving into activity.

Land-Based Learning (Optional Component)

When weather and space allow, students step outside for a short, quiet land-based experience.

Activities may include:
• A silent walk to notice cold air, wind, and winter sounds
• Observing what feels asleep and what remains active
• Learning how snow insulates plants and animals as a simple science connection
• Building small “winter nests” or earth offerings

Students begin to see winter as alive and purposeful, while teachers gain an easy, meaningful approach to outdoor winter learning.

Curriculum Integration

Mother Earth Sleeps connects naturally to curriculum expectations across grade levels.

Kindergarten to Grade 2

• Seasons and emotions
• Listening and story retell
• Belonging and safety

Grades 3 to 5

• Winter ecosystems
• Weather patterns
• Moon cycles and observation

Grades 6 to 8

• Climate awareness
• Cycles and stewardship
• Metaphor and reflection

The story acts as an anchor for literacy, science, art, and wellness learning, weaving Indigenous worldview into required curriculum in an accessible way.

Art Methodology – Mother Earth Resting

The Art Project

Students create an image of Mother Earth resting beneath her winter blanket.

The process includes:
• Creating Mother Earth’s shape or silhouette
• Building a winter blanket using cotton balls and tissue paper
• Painting with a winter palette of blues, whites, and greys
• Adding symbols such as snow dots, wind lines, or a moon circle

Soft textures and simple shapes help students reflect calm, care, and rest through their artwork.

A Regulating and Sensory Creative Process

This art activity is designed to support sensory regulation and emotional balance.

The metaphor is clear and age-appropriate, making it accessible for Kindergarten through Grade 8. Finished pieces can be displayed as a winter gallery that reflects collective learning.

After the art session, students often feel proud, settled, and connected.

Workshop Flow

A typical workshop follows this gentle rhythm:

  • Grounding with drum and breathing
  • Storytelling with silence and reflection
  • Short outdoor land-based moment
  • Quiet, focused art creation
  • Closing circle with gratitude

The result is regulated students, engaged teachers, and meaningful Indigenous learning rooted in story, land, and art.
