Wood Pieces by Jessica Somers

WOOD art

Jessica Somers creates hand-painted wood artworks that honour the natural character of the material while carrying Indigenous teachings and storytelling. Each piece is shaped by the wood itself, allowing the grain, edges, and texture to remain an active part of the artwork. These works offer a tactile and visual experience that differs from canvas or paper, grounding the artwork firmly in the natural world.

Natural Materials and Craftsmanship

All wood pieces are created on premium balsam poplar with live edges.

Each piece is:

  • Hand-painted by Jessica
  • Uniquely shaped by the natural form of the wood
  • Textured with visible grain, knots, and patterns

No two pieces are alike, and the natural variation is embraced rather than altered.

Sizes and Custom Options

Standard sizes range from 11 × 22 inches to 22 × 48 inches.

Custom sizes are available upon request for specific spaces, installations, or series work. Each custom piece is discussed individually to ensure the wood and artwork align with the intended setting.

Storytelling Through Wood

The artwork integrates Indigenous teachings, symbolism, and storytelling, creating layers of meaning and cultural connection.

The natural surface of the wood becomes part of the narrative, reinforcing themes of land, identity, balance, and responsibility without separating the story from the material itself.

Preservation and Finish

Each wood piece is sealed with archival-grade finishes to preserve colour, texture, and surface detail.

These works are intended for indoor display only and are not recommended for outdoor exposure. Proper care ensures the artwork remains strong and vibrant over time.

A Different Way to Experience the Artwork

Wood artworks offer a physical presence that invites viewers to slow down and engage closely. By allowing the material to guide the form and composition, these pieces emphasize the relationship between art, land, and story, creating a grounded and meaningful viewing experience.
